Calls to overhaul draft that would rush yoga instructors but not all tradies into Australia

Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) has published its draft list of essential skills occupations – essentially the types of workers who could be prioritized for temporary skilled visas.
According to the project, JSA is confident that yoga and martial arts instructors, dog handlers and jewelry designers will be included in the priority list.
While some construction workers such as carpenters and electricians are on the provisional “included” list, others such as plumbers, tilers and bricklayers are earmarked for further consideration.
This is despite Australia needing an extra 90,000 skilled tradespeople to meet the government’s target of 1.2 new homes built over the next five years.
“All trades must be on the final list,” Master Builders Australia chief executive Denita Won said.
“We can’t understand why they weren’t there in the first place.”
“It is completely against the overwhelming evidence before us of our need to shelter all Australians.”
The opposition, which has pledged to drastically reduce migration levels if it wins power in next year’s federal election, also weighed in on the list.
“We have a housing crisis in this country because we can’t build houses fast enough,” said National Senator Bridget McKenzie.
“And the dog handler, the martial artists won’t do that.”
The JSA has made it clear that its draft list is “for consultation only” and is not its final advice to the government.
“This does not represent the final advice that Jobs and Skills Australia will provide to the Government, nor is it a decision by the Government,” it states.
The final JSA list will be made available to the government later this year before Immigration Minister Andrew Giles decides on the official list of essential skills occupations.
