New app reducing food waste by offering baked goods for half-price

An app launching in Sydney tomorrow will offer locals a way to save money on premium food while ensuring businesses don’t waste produce.
Food bag allows bakeries to sell leftover food at the end of the day at a 50 percent discount instead of just throwing it away.
App users save nearby stores in the app and are then alerted directly when there is leftover food for sale.
The app started in Perth three years ago and has already saved more than 150,000 food items from ending up in the bin, founder Stuart Kidd said.
“Food waste at the retailer level is huge … a retailer can lose $20,000 to $200,000 worth of product a year.”
Household food waste is also a problem, with the average Australian throwing away 312kg of food a year, worth about $2500, according to the Department of the Environment.
The All Green Gluten Free Bakery in Alexandria pumps out 500 pastries a day.
“From apple crumble, Portuguese tarts, lemon meringue, we make gorgeous cakes,” said Cheri Lydon of Wholegreen Bakery.
The bakery has donated to OzHarvest for a decade and will continue to do so, but says the app is good for getting rid of the more unique items.
”Gluten-free food… it’s expensive, it’s going to create products that are a little more affordable.”
