Queenslanders will be able to continue to enjoy 50 cent fares on public transport after the State Government confirmed the policy would become permanent.

The plan was first introduced under the previous Labor government and saw public transport costs cut across the Translink networks.

Prime Minister Crisafulli had announced the popular policy would remain in place during the state election campaign, with his government today announcing the cut was made permanent.

Cheap fares will remain in place for bus, train, tram and ferry services in South East Queensland.

Bus networks operated by Translink in the rest of Queensland will also remain cheaper.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg said it was a great day for Queenslanders.

He said patronage across all public transport has increased and has saved people about $110 million.

“I would like to thank the staff and operators of public transport in Queensland for their support in the successful implementation of 50 cent fares,” Mickelberg said.

From August to October, 14.3 percent more people rode a bus, according to data from “Transport and Main Roads”.

Train journeys increased by 17.9%.

The number of people using the Gold Coast Light Rail also increased by 22.1 per cent.

In total, since the introduction of the policy, there has been an increase in trips by 11 percent.
